Abscess prevention

So what is an abscess? An abscess is a localized collection of pus in any part of the body, usually caused by an infection. Abscesses develop when an area of tissue becomes infected and the body is able to prevent the infection and keep if from spreading. During this process forms, which is an accumulation of fluid, living and dead white blood cells, dead bacteria or other foreign invaders or materials.

Most abscesses are septic (caused by infection) but sterile abscesses can also occur which are not caused by germs but by non-living irritants such as drugs. If an injected drug, especially oil based ones such as anabolic steroids are not fully absorbed, it stays where it was injected and may cause enough irritation to generate a sterile abscess. Sterile abscesses are likely to turn into hard, solid lumps as they scar, rather than pockets of pus.

Superficial abscesses are readily visible and as stated above, are red, swollen, painful and warm. Abscesses in other areas of the body may not be obvious and may produce only generalized symptoms such as fever and discomfort. A sterile abscess may cause only a painful lump, for example deep gluteus injections. If the abscess is small enough,  inch or less, applying warm compresses/hot soaks to the area for about 30 minutes ed can help.

Sometimes though, it will not disperse and you need medical attention. At this point a culture or examination of any drainage from the lesion will help identify what is causing the abscess. The infection can spread to the tissues under the skin and eventually enter the bloodstream, resulting in septicaemia which can be very serious and life threatening. Unlike other infections, antibiotics alone will not cure a well developed abscess. In general an abscess must be cut open and drained by a doctor in order for it to improve.
Once the sore has drained, the doctor will insert some packing into the remaining cavity to minimize any bleeding and keep it open for a day or two. With time the cavity will heal, but you can expect to be out of the gym for weeks. When it does heal, scar tissue will form, therefore, no more injections in that area.

Infection can be a problem with any type of injection, due to the nature of having to transverse though the protective barrier of the skin. It is extremely important to inject under sterile and sanitary conditions to avoid transmitting infectious foreign organisms into the body. The most common infective complication when injecting Anabolic Steroids is an abscess.

Researchers Rich et al. (1999) report of a case of a 26 year old anabolic steroid user who did not use sterile injection techniques and wound up with an injection-related thigh abscess. This individual reported sharing multi-dosage vials with two other weightlifting colleagues who also developed infections. It took approximately 3-4 months and a trip to the emergency room to control the infection and begin healing.

Two cases of thigh abscesses were discovered in male and female professional weight lifters who injected a veterinary preparation of stanozolol contaminated with Mycobacterium smegmatis. Two case reports of staphylococcal gluteal abscesses developed in young bodybuilders 18 and 21 years of age.

Precautions to take when injecting anabolic steroids:

1) Inject under strict sanitary conditions, this means not in your dirty ass bathroom you haven't clean in a year or near your dirty laundry and sweat socks.

2) Use correct injection technique, inject intramuscularly, aspirate the syringe and use large main, muscle groups only.

3) Avoid sharing or reusing needles. Sharing is for junkies, don't do it. As for reusing, needles are cheap and readily available right here on our board so dont do it. Use one needle for withdraw and then remove, put on a new needle and inject.

4) Make sure your skin is clean. Inject right after a shower or use an alcohol swab/wipe to clean the area as well as the top of all multi-injection vials.

5) Check your source for legit products. Some UG gear is made in horrible locations that are not sanitary, do some research to make sure what you are putting in your body is legit and well manufactured.

Skin Abscess

Skin abscess is a purulo-necrotic inflammation of skin and subcutaneous tissue, empyesis after bacterial infection which enters the body when skin is damaged. Abscess is characterized with existence of cavity filled with white matter which is surrounded by pyogenic membrane. Its formation is manifestation of normal defense reaction of body.

Pyogenic membrane bounds purulo-necrotic process and prevents it from spreading. However, sometimes bacteria may spread from abscess area infecting surrounding tissue that causes panniculitis and also infect nearest lymphatic vessels and lymphatic nodes resulting in development of limfangiita and lymphadenitis.

Symptoms
Skin abscess looks like a sore formation, by touch is filled with heavy liquid. Symptoms include skin redding, inflation, painfullness, the skin is hot above it. May appear common symptoms such as body temperature increase, intoxication (appetite loss, weakness). Blood test shows inflammatory response.

Causes
Skin abscess usually is formed in case of skin irritation when the bacteria (which usually is found on the skin) do enter the wound and cause damage of issues and formation of white matter. However, is possible spread of infection from primary site (furuncle), hematoma sore (accumulation of effused blood), cystis (accumulation of liquids limited within a capsule).

Abscess may become a complication in case of injecting concentrated solution of medications in soft tissues. Is possible lymphogenic spread of purulent infection. Skin abscesses often are formed on the back of immunity lowering resulted from immune deficiency, diabetes, abrosia, disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, liver and kidneys.

Diagnosis

On the skin appears a lump filled with liquid. The skin is hyperemic, hot and painful. Regional lymphatic glands may be increased. Patient may have next symptoms: body temperature increase, appetite loss, weakness, headache.

Treatment
Abscess diagnosis is an indication to opening of mattery cavity, its washing with antiseptic solution, drainage to let white matter go out. Also is performed antibacterial therapy .

Palmar Abscess

Abscess is an circumscribed purulent inflammation of tissues with formation of a cavity filled with white matter. In case of palmar abscess it is localized on hand.

Abscesses may be formed round tendons which run through inner surface of fingers. It is connected with pervasive damage of one of crinkles on palmar side of finger. Thus occurs reproduction of microorganisms and formation of white matter round tendons that quickly damages tissue. The mechanism of tendons sliding damages so that finger almost not move.

Symptoms include swelling and inflammation of the finger, pains in area of tendon sheath and acute pains when moving with finger. Lymphatic glands behind abscess get increased, body temperature rises, appear chills and headache. The abscess area is red, during palpation patient may feel inflations of nearest to abscess lymphatic glands. Bone inflammation deeper than abscess is followed with increased pain.

Palmar abscesses are quite common and usually are resulted from trauma. Abscess on soft tissue of finger tip almost always appears after a slight damage, for example, splinter hitting or needling.

Diagnostics
During examination are noticed forced semiflexed position of fingers, their turgidity, puffiness, restriction and painfullness of movements, hand swelling. In case of interdigital localization of the process fingers may be spread, half bent and edematic. In the process are involved lymphatic glands and appear symptoms of common body intoxication. General blood test shows changes specific for inflammation.

Treatment
Surgical treatment includes opening, processing and drainage of affected area. Also antibacterial treatment .It is necessary to use specific medications such as staphylococcic antitoxin and specific gamma globulin. At the stage of recovery are used physiotherapeutic

Head And Neck Abscess

Abscess is a specific mattery inflammation of tissues with formation of cavity filled with white matter. Pathogen is pyogenic organisms, most frequently staphylococcus and streptococci.

Head and neck abscesses most often are developed behind throat and in salivary glands. There are abscesses behind and aside from throat, parapharyngeal abscess (located in lymphatic gland), abscesses in region of chin, etc, - localization may vary. Abscess in outgoing channel of one of parotid salivary glands occurs in elderly age or in some chronic diseases because if dryness in oral cavity resulted from insufficient consumption of liquids or during taking some medications, for example, antihistamine drugs.

The symptoms include pains in affected area, inflation, skin redness, frank fluctuation, throat inflames so that it becomes hard to talk and swallow. Also may be common symptoms such as body temperature increase, chill, intoxication. The process may continue further and may be followed by neck inflation. When abscess damages carotid artery located in neck, this may cause development of thrombosis or major bleeding.

Most frequently head and abscesses development is caused by trauma or spread of inflammation from damaged teeth, inflammatory gums, sore tonsils or infectious inflammatory damages of mucosa of oral cavity or skin. Infection spreads via lymphs and rarely via blood. Abscesses are formed because of nearby presence of focus of infection, for example, abscess of a tooth or sialoadenitis. Abscesses nearby throat are caused by inflammation of amygdala and adenoide and occurs most frequently in children.

In most cases neck abscesses require an operation with arrangement of conditions for white matter outflow. Also are prescribed antibiotics. Head and neck abscess are dangerous because they may cause spread of infection to front and back mediastinal, appearing of sepsis, affecting of vessels followed by bleeding, development of phlebemphraxis, abscess of brain.

What Is Abscess Treatment

Often abscess courses without special treatment – it opens by itself and its contents flows out

Sometimes abscess goes away slowly without burstings as body fights infection and dead tissues go through corresponding changes After abscess goes away, there may be left a hard nodule on its spot.

In order to lessen pain and fasten healing you may prick the abscess and drain it. To drain large amount of abscess it is necessary to consult the doctor to let him examine it to destroy walls and release all white matter.

After draining the large abscess there remains an empty space which should be tamponed. Sometimes there is necessary to insert temporal artificial drainages (usually these are thin plastic tubes).

Abscess is not supplied with blood, therefore antibiotics usually are ineffective. They may be prescribed after abscess drain to prevent relapse.

Antibiotics may be prescribed when abscess is source of infection spread on other organs. Seeding of white matter for antibiotics sensitivity helps the doctor to choose most effective medication.

What Are Abscess Symptoms

Abscess is gathering of white matter due to development of bacterial infection. The bacteria get into healthy tissue and thus infection is developed in particular area. Some cells get damaged and on those spots is accumulated liquid along with infected cells.

To those spots are navigated leucocites (body protectors against infections) which die after they catch bacteria. Gathering of dead leucocites do form white matter that fills damaged area. While white matter accumulates, the healthy tissue moves away.

Gradually around abscess is formed connective tissue and walls around abscess – in this way body prevents further microorganisms spreading. When occurs rupture of abscess, the pathogens may get into the body or under the skin depending on abscess localization.  Abscess may be developed in any organs including lungs, mouth, rectum and muscles. Frequently they occur on the skin, especially on the face.

Abscess symptoms
Symptoms of abscess are detemined by the spot of its location and dysfunction of organ or nerve in abscess area. Symptoms may include pain, painful palpation, local skin temperature increase, intumescence, redding and sometimes increase of body temperature. Abscess that is formed under skin usually looks like intumescence.

Before opening, it becomes white in central part because skin around it gets thin. When abscess is developed deep in the body then for the symptoms appaering it must have significant size. Unobserved deep abscess often is source of infection spreading through the whole body.
