The Symptoms of Amebiasis

Amebiasis is a contagious disease caused by unicellular parasite Entamoeba histolytica which damages large intestine.

As a rule, infected people, especially those who live in moderate climate, have no symptoms at all. Symptoms sometimes are so uncommon that people do not pay attention to them. They may include diarrhea alternating with uncleared bowels, meteorism, spasms in abdomen, pains in abdomen.

Pains may appear in abdomen during palpation, sometimes faeces contain blood and mucus. Is possible body temperature rise. Between attacks the intensity of symptoms lowers and are observed only recurrent spasms in abdomen. In patient is developed cachexia and anemia.

Invasion of trophozooids into intestinal wall may be followed with formation of ameboma (tumor-like formation) which leads to intestinal obstruction, therefore sometimes is mistaken for cancerous growth. Trophozooids in some cases do enter body via intestinal wall. Getting contents into abdominal cavity is followed with severe pains and peritoneal inflammation which requires immediate taking the steps.

Invasion of appendix trophozooids and bowels near-by areas may cause mild form of appendicitis. However, operation of appendicitis removal may cause spread of trophozooids into abdominal cavity, therefore it is delayed for 48 – 72 hours and before it patient should take medications to kill trophozooids.
In liver may be formed an abscess filled with trophozooids.

Symptoms include pains or discomfort in liver area, body temperature rise, sweats, chills, nausea and vomiting, weakness, weight loss and sometimes mild yellow disease.

In some cases  trophozooids do spread via blood into lungs, brain and other organs. Also skin may be infected, especially in genitals area, or wound area.
